Halal In Travel Awards is a celebration of the travel industry players' efforts to make Halal travel a seamless experience. These awards recognize destinations, organizations, companies, and individuals who have made a considerable impact on the Muslim lifestyle travel segment spanning different categories.
There are four categories of awards. Each category has a list of awards given to the top performer based on the winner selection process. Some of the awards are based on the GMTI scores, some are through a nomination process followed by the selection of winners by a panel of judges consisting of industry experts, and another set of awards based on popular votes.
The awards under this non-voting category are based on the scores of the highly-acclaimed Mastercard-CrescentRating GMTI Awards which adopts the latest set of measurements that indicate the level of Muslim-friendly travel in 140 destinations.
The awards in this category honour a variety of Halal-friendly establishments, including hotel chains and airports. The winners are chosen by a panel of judges based on nominations.
The awards in this category aim to determine the best Muslim-friendly destinations from the traveler's point of view. HalalTrip, CrescentRating's sister company, will facilitate the Travelers Choice Awards.
The awards in this category are intended to recognise the contributions that outstanding people have made to the growth of the travel sector that is welcoming to Muslims. The winner of this category will be chosen based on nominations, and then the winners will be chosen by a panel of judges.
Dato' Dr. Mohmed Razip Haji Hasan, the Director-General of ITC Malaysia, received the "Top Muslim-Friendly Destination of The Year" award for Malaysia in 2022. This award recognizes Malaysia’s outstanding efforts to provide the best service for Muslim travelers continuously. Malaysia has topped the GMTI index since its launch in 2015.
Mr. Keith Tan, the CEO of the Singapore Tourism Board, received the "Top Muslim-Friendly Destination of The Year (non-OIC)" award for Singapore in 2022. This award recognizes Singapore’s tremendous efforts in making travel experiences for Muslims as seamless as possible.
H.E. Kakhramon Shakirov, the Ambassador of Uzbekistan to Singapore, received the "Top Muslim-Friendly Emerging Destination of The Year (OIC)" award for Uzbekistan in 2022. This award recognizes Uzbekistan’s effort to initiate some major projects to capitalize on the rich Islamic heritage that their destination offers and develop Ziyarah Tourism to better position themselves as a Muslim-friendly destination.
H.E. Santiago Miralles, the Ambassador of Spain to Singapore, received the "Top Muslim-Friendly Emerging Destination of The Year (non-OIC)" award for Spain in 2022. This is a reflection of Spain's tourism stakeholders' effort to enhance halal tourism services over the last few years. Spain also made a significant leap in the GMTI rankings this year among non-OIC destinations.
Dr. Trust Lin, Deputy Director-General of the Taiwan Tourism Bureau, received the “Inclusive Destination of The Year (non-OIC)” award for Taiwan in 2022. This award recognizes resilient efforts in improving the Muslim travel environment through education and training to help understand the lifestyle needs of Muslims. The positive effect can be seen in the increasing number of Muslim-friendly hotels, attractions, and halal restaurants.
H.E. Mehmet Burçin Gönenli, Ambassador of Turkey to Singapore, received the “Most Accessible Destination of The Year (by Air)” award for Turkiye in 2022. This award recognizes Turkiye’s significant effort in connecting Muslim travelers and their achievement of becoming the highest level of air connectivity from the top 30 Muslim travel outbound markets.
Dato’ Seri Mohamed Rafik Mohd Idris, the Managing Director of Mardhiyyah Hotel & Suites, received the "Muslim-friendly Hotel of The Year" award for Mardhiyyah Hotel & Suites in 2022. This award recognizes their remarkable services that cater well to the accommodation needs of Muslim travelers.
Wome Deluxe received the “Muslim-friendly Beach Resort of The Year” in 2022, for ensuring a private and pleasant vacation experience for Muslim Travelers.
John Burk, Deputy General Manager of Kuala Lumpur Convention Center, received the " Muslim-friendly Convention & Exhibition Centre of The Year" award for Kuala Lumpur Convention Center in 2022. This award recognizes their excellent halal services at the venue and remarkable effort to create an accommodating environment for Muslim visitors.
Istanbul Grand Airport received the “Muslim-friendly Airport of The Year” in 2022, for the most seamless flight connections for Muslim travelers.
Doha, Qatar received the “Most Promising Muslim-friendly City Destination of The Year (OIC)” in 2022. Halal establishments and mosques are around the corner from anywhere in this premier city, which has retained its traditional look and preserved its culture while boasting an exotic skyline.
Enver Duminy, Chief Executive Officer of Cape Town Tourism, received the “Most Promising Muslim-friendly City Destination of The Year (non-OIC)” award for Cape Town, South Africa in 2022. The tireless work of Cape Town Tourism in building capacity and capabilities to welcome travelers to the city, and their commitment in promoting Halal awareness has led the city to become more Muslim-friendly.
H.E. Kakhramon Shakirov, the Ambassador of Uzbekistan to Singapore, received the " Islamic Heritage Destination of The Year" award for Samarkand, Uzbekistan in 2022. The award serves as a tribute to the excellent showcase of their rich Islamic heritage.
Makiko Matsuda Healy, Managing Director of Tourism Development of NYC & Company, received the “Halal Travel Marketing Campaign of The Year” award for NYC & Company in 2022. The company has made efforts to understand Muslim travelers better and promote the city as a Muslim-friendly destination. Their work includes publishing and promoting NYC Halal Travel Guide, a first by a US destination marketing organization.
H.E. Dr. Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno, the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy of the Republic of Indonesia, was awarded the title of "Halal Travel Personality of The Year" for 2022. Since he took over the Ministry he has been at the forefront of raising the awareness of the halal tourism market. His wisdom and contribution have helped travel stakeholders in Indonesia better understand and embrace this market segment. His efforts have also raised global awareness of embracing the Muslim market as a strategic market that all tourism organizations should focus on.
Amira Rahmat (@asingaporeanabroad) was named the "Halal Travel Influencer of The Year" for 2022. The award recognizes her exemplary work advocating for halal travel through her handle @asingaporeanabroad on various social media platforms.
Mr. Riyanto Sofyan, the Chairman of SofyanCorp, was presented with the "Halal Hotel Pioneers" special recognition award in 2022. This award recognizes his contribution to trailblazing the development of the Halal hotel Industry in Indonesia.
Datuk Mohd Ilyas Zainol Abidin, Managing Director of Biztel Sdn Bhd, was presented with the "Halal Hotel Pioneers" special recognition award in 2022. This award serves as a testament to him, as a legend in the development of the Halal hotel Industry in Malaysia.
Dr. Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno, Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy of the Republic of Indonesia, received the "Top Muslim-Friendly Destination of The Year" award for Indonesia in 2023. Ms. Nur Rita Syakirah Abdullah Kaur, Senior Vice President of Guest Experience and Service Delivery of Royal Brunei Airlines received the “Muslim-friendly Airline of The Year” for Royal Brunei Airlines in 2024. The award recognizes the outstanding efforts of Royal Brunei Airlines in making travel experiences for Muslims as seamless as possible. Royal Brunei Airlines was one of the first airlines to include hijabs in its uniforms and stopped serving alcohol in 1982. Ikuto Hongu (@navito_halal) was named the “Halal Travel Influencer of The Year” in 2024. The award recognizes Ikuto’s proactive efforts in creating Muslim-friendly content and consistently educating himself on Islamic practices, as well as offering insightful guidance on halal dining and accommodations, particularly in Japan. Ikuto’s dedication to supporting Muslim travelers and enhancing their travel experiences reflects his deep commitment to inclusivity and cultural sensitivity in travel.
Dr. Nurhafizh Noor received the “Halal Travel Scholar of The Year” for Dr. Mohamed Battour in 2024. As one of the most cited scholars globally in this field, Dr. Battour has consistently published influential articles in leading journals and authored the book "Halal Tourism" in 2019. Dr. Battour’s expertise is regularly shared at conferences, and his extensive work in top-ranking journals establishes his prominence in the field.
