In a bid to attract Muslim travelers from Malaysia and Brunei, Taiwan has taken a significant step forward in promoting itself as a Muslim-friendly destination. At the recent Halal In Travel Global Summit 2023, Abe Chou, Director of the Taiwan Tourism Bureau KL Office, presented Taiwan's initiatives to cater to the growing Muslim-friendly travel market.
Nestled in East Asia, Taiwan is a captivating island nation situated southwest of Japan and north of the Philippines. Taiwan has emerged as a popular destination, attracting around 530,000 Malaysian tourists in 2019. Of these visitors, about 30 percent, were Muslims.
To further embrace the Muslim-friendly travel market, Taiwan Tourism Bureau has introduced a fresh marketing approach. The 2023 promotional video showcased a new slogan, "Salam Taiwan" portraying Taiwan as a destination offering heartwarming and heart-touching experiences. Chou emphasized that Taiwan boasts four pillars for Muslim travelers: vibrant and masterful, romantic and endearing, aware and knowledgeable, and modern and innovative.
The country has curated multiple itineraries to cater to these diverse interests. One such itinerary includes a pineapple DIY experience and a chance to savor iconic dishes like bubble tea, halal beef noodles, and Halal-certified treats at Night Market stalls. For couples seeking a romantic getaway, Taiwan offers a variety of activities and idyllic settings to kindle love and affection. Nature enthusiasts can also find solace in Taiwan's diverse landscape, including blooming cherry blossoms in spring, tranquil lakes, and romantic old streets.
To enhance the Muslim-friendly experience, Taiwan has provided Halal certifications to more than 230 restaurants and hotels. These establishments maintain separate kitchens for preparing halal food, as well as provide prayer facilities, prayer mats, and prayer timetables. In addition to ensuring halal travel options, Taiwan offers Muslim-friendly facilities at various transportation hubs, scenic areas, and 13 National Scenic Sports locations.
In an effort to increase awareness among Muslim travelers, Taiwan has undertaken a comprehensive outreach program. The country has collaborated with travel agencies, both local and international, to develop user-friendly services tailored to Muslim tourists' needs. Taiwan has also participated in travel fairs and workshops to keep the industry informed about the latest developments and offerings for Muslim travelers. Brochures in various languages, including Bahasa Malaysia, have been made available to tourists seeking Muslim-friendly information.
To bolster its presence, Taiwan has partnered with major retailers like Watsons and used cinema advertising, vehicle advertisements, and social media promotions to engage with a wider audience.
Chou ended his presentation on an optimistic note, expressing Taiwan's readiness to welcome Muslim travelers, stating, "Taiwan is ready, and we eagerly await your visit." As Taiwan continues its dedicated efforts to attract Muslim travelers, Taiwan hopes to build strong connections with the global Muslim community and showcase the rich cultural heritage and scenic beauty the island nation has to offer.
