Halal in Travel Global Summit 2026: Reimagining the Future of Connected and Compassionate Hospitality

The 6th annual Halal in Travel Global Summit (HITGS) 2026 successfully concluded its two-day run from June 17th to June 18th. Embracing a dynamic hybrid format, the global summit brought together a diverse, multi-disciplinary array of stakeholders—ranging from academics and national tourism organizations (NTOs) to industry professionals and digital content storytellers—all sharing the same room to map out the future of Muslim-friendly travel under the theme “Halal Travel 360: Connected, Conscious, Compassionate”.

Conducted virtually for its strategic content tracks and culminating in person at Aloft by Marriott Singapore Novena, the summit established a collaborative space to bridge data-driven technology with cultural empathy.

Diplomatic Tracks: Aligning Global Policy and Diplomacy

A defining highlight of the 2026 summit was the high-level participation of international tourism leaders and diplomats, highlighting that faith-aligned travel has graduated into a core pillar of international relations and macro-economic policy:

UN Tourism Opening Keynote

Ion Vîlcu, Director of the Affiliate Members Department at UN Tourism, delivered the official opening keynote address. Vîlcu emphasized the strategic necessity of connecting specialized, faith-compatible market intelligence with global tourism priorities to drive long-term destination resilience and structural inclusiveness.

Tourism Diplomacy Panel

A milestone session titled “Tourism Diplomacy: Advancing Inclusive Travel Across Borders” brought together H.E. Sadık Arslan, the Turkish Ambassador, alongside industry veteran Soon-Hwa Wong and Mohamed Desouky. The distinguished panel explored how cross-border diplomatic cooperation, bilateral agreements, and standardized service frameworks can systematically dismantle travel friction, foster cultural understanding, and open up low-resistance travel corridors between diverse nations.

Panel Discussions: Unpacking Technology, Gastronomy, and Collaboration

Halal in Travel Global Summit 2026 Panel Discussion

The core of HITGS 2026 featured a comprehensive lineup of analytical panels designed to move past generic industry tropes and explore operational realities.

  • Innovating the Halal Food Ecosystem: Focused heavily on culinary tourism and conscious gastronomy, exploring how farm-to-table traceability and local heritage food brands are reshaping the visitor lifecycle.

  • Cross-Border Collaboration: Analyzed how OIC and non-OIC destinations can share best practices. Panelists detailed how mature markets can exchange insights on multilingual accessibility, journey mapping, and joint training networks to move beyond traditional KPI barriers.

  • Hospitality Education & Global Events: Explored the structural role of specialized hospitality education in advancing service standards and integrating the Muslim traveler experience directly into major international events.

Destination Showcases: Bridging Culture with Ecosystem Readiness

A primary highlight of the summit was the series of Muslim-friendly destination introductions, where prominent tourism boards demonstrated how they are adapting their spaces to welcome faith-conscious travelers:

Spain

Represented by Irene Valencia from Spain Tourism board, the country showcased its targeted promotional roadshows and regional campaign setups aimed at illuminating the rich Islamic history of the Andalusia region alongside a growing network of certified amenities.

Taiwan

Abe Chou from The Taiwan Tourism Administration highlighted the destination’s aggressive ecosystem expansion, detailing over 450 certified restaurants and hotels, alongside specialized prayer facilities placed along scenic mountain routes and major cycling hubs.

The Philippines

Championed a massive, coordinated push by its Department of Tourism—highlighting regions with deep historical Islamic roots like Mindanao—to deploy dedicated digital resources and structured culinary offers.

Honoring Excellence: Celebrating the Champions of Halal Travel

HITGS 2026 placed a special spotlight on the innovators driving grass-roots transformation and narrative change across the tourism ecosystem:

Content Creator Tank

This dynamic pitch competition gave travel storytellers a dedicated stage to pitch impactful, highly creative concepts aimed at changing how Muslim-friendly travel is documented and shared. The winners are partnered with Macao, Spain, and The Philippines’ tourism board for an unforgettable journey.

HalalTrip People Awards

This award is conferred to grass-roots change-makers who are building positive social differences and shifting cross-cultural perceptions at the local level. Atikah Syarah Ismail from Singapore, Mohammed Musa from Bangladesh, and Mohammed Al-Abood from Saudi Arabia were all awarded for their selfless contribution that makes their surroundings better for the people, and inevitably, for the Muslim community.

Halal in Travel (HIT) Awards

Celebrating innovation and excellence, the Halal in Travel Awards shine a spotlight on the industry players driving low-friction, faith-aligned mobility. From national destinations to grassroots innovators, these awards honor those reshaping the multi-billion-dollar Muslim lifestyle travel segment. The honors are distributed across four core categories, with top-performing winners determined through a mix of data-driven GMTI performance scores and an official, competitive nomination cycle.

Some standout winners include Malaysia that has successfully defended its crown as the “Top Muslim-Friendly Destination of the Year”, while Singapore and Hong Kong tied as leaders in accessible non-OIC travel. The summit also celebrated regional milestones, naming West Java, Indonesia, as the “Most Promising Muslim-Friendly Region of the Year”.

The Main Event: Unveiling the Global Muslim Travel Index 2026

The definitive peak of the summit was the official launch of the 11th edition of the Mastercard-CrescentRating Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2026. This year's index introduced a profound structural update, demonstrating that a striking 80% of modern travelers now utilize AI tools to discover, filter, and plan their global itineraries.

By highlighting a 1% index increase across the top 20 non-OIC destinations, the GMTI 2026 demonstrated that long-term market growth is shifting away from generic promotional statements toward precise "algorithmic visibility"—proving that machine-readable data trust is the new baseline for global destination competitiveness.

The Next Chapter of Resilient Tourism

As the curtains fell on HITGS 2026, the clear consensus among global leaders was that the Halal travel market has officially graduated into a mature, highly digitized economic corridor. For destinations and operators worldwide, the path forward requires a seamless integration of physical infrastructure modifications with transparent digital trust systems. The brands and territories that actively listen to diverse traveler demographics and verify their offerings upstream will hold the definitive competitive advantage in the years ahead.
